Player ratings:

Zack Steffen (GK) – 5/10 – Out of placement for both goals, could have done more on both occasions to stop the shot.

DeAndre Yedlin (RB) – 7/10 – Sufficient, better on ground duels over aerial but must strengthen his offensive capacity.

Walker Zimmerman (CB) – 7/10 – Have seen him be stronger and cover more ground, but the job completed.

Miles Robinson (CB) – 8/10 – Good effort when on the ball, dominant on the left side of the pitch.

Antonee Robinson (LB) – 7.5/10 – One of the most exciting figures on the pitch, great at transitioning from defense to attack but lacked edge during the second goal.

Qualified Banner:

If the U.S. manages to lose by six goals or more—a highly unlikely outcome; perhaps even less likely than, say, losing in Trinidad & Tobago while events in two other simultaneous matches conspire against the U.S.—then this moment from the postgame celebrations will go down as an all-time gaffe.

Yet after a 5–1 win over Panama on Sunday night, U.S. players prematurely unveiled a “qualified” banner for fans despite not yet having qualified for the 2022 World Cup.

With one game to go, the U.S. is all but there. The U.S. leads fourth-place Costa Rica by three points and has a +10 edge in goal differential, meaning that even with a loss of five or fewer goals in their head-to-head matchup to close qualifying on Wednesday night, the U.S. is heading to Qatar in November.

Goalkeepers:

    • Goalkeepers (3): Ethan Horvath, Zack Steffen, Matt Turner.

    • Defenders (7): Reggie Cannon, Sergino Dest, Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson, Miles Robinson, DeAndre Yedlin, Walker Zimmerman.

    • Midfielders (6): Kellyn Acosta, Tyler Adams, Luca de la Torre, Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, Cristian Roldan.

  • Forwards (7): Brenden Aaronson, Jesus Ferreira, Jordan Morris, Ricardo Pepi, Christian Pulisic, Giovanni Reyna, Tim Weah.

At the back, the U.S. has goalkeepers 1a and 1b in Matt Turner and Zack Steffen. The great news is both those players will be playing for Premier League giants next season. Unfortunately, as it stands, neither of them is likely to be a starter next season.

It’s possible, therefore, that both first-choice goalkeepers could enter the World Cup with just a tiny sample of recent on-field minutes. That’s a problem Berhalter will have to sort through, especially after Steffen struggled at times in the qualification finale against Costa Rica.
