USFL: Semifinals| MVP| Playoffs scores| Championship game

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got playoff football in June. Unlike the AAF and XFL before it, the rebooted USFL completed a full 10-game regular season before holding a playoff semi-final on Saturday from Canton, Ohio.

Saturday’s winners, the Philadelphia Stars and Birmingham Stallions, will face off in the USFL Championship Game on Sunday, July 3. The teams bounced back in Week 5, when the Stallions closed the Stars en route to a 30–17 victory in the second half.

The Stars stunned a Generals team to win their ticket to the championship game, which had lost just one game during the regular season and defeated Philly twice. The Stars enjoyed a 10–0 lead before New Jersey stars Darius Victor and Kavonte Turpin gave the Generals the lead in just under 11 minutes. Philadelphia responded with an 88-yard punt return by Maurice Alexander, a field goal, two defensive stands and the game-winning score.

Birmingham entered the title game by winning their 10th game of the season and third game over the Breakers. After falling behind early, the stallion scored three second-quarter touchdowns to take a 21-14 lead at half-time. Birmingham tied the score to Osiris Mitchell on a 23-yard touchdown pass from J’Mar Smith. He took his first lead on a pick-six from DeMarquis Gates’ Kyle Slaughter, who tied the score on his 35-yard touchdown pass to run back Jordan Ellis moments later. The score was level with only nine seconds to spare, as a kickoff return for the Stallions’ receiver Victor Bolden to score gave Birmingham the lead for good. A short touchdown run by Smith with 45 seconds into the game betrayed the final score of how close the semi-final really was.

MVP

The United States Football League (USFL) was originally formed in 1983 and lasted for three seasons before folding in 1986. In its short lifetime the USFL was able to sign some of the most talented football players of its time. Herschel Walker, Mike Rozier, Doug Flutie, Jim Kelly, Steve Young and Reggie White all suited up on the NFL for USFL teams straight out of college.

The USFL is back after 37 years. Eight teams in the two divisions played ten game seasons from 16 April to 19 June.

Playoffs scores

On Saturday, the Stallions faced the Breakers for the third time this season. They completed the sweep, defeating their South Division rival 31–17 in the playoff semi-finals.

The Breakers took an early 7-0 lead, but the stallions fell into the groove after that. He got a big kickoff return touchdown to take a 21-14 halftime lead from Victor Bolden Jr. and then dismissed the Breakers 10-3 in the second half. Birmingham led the USFL during the regular season with a plus-65 second-half point difference.

Coach Skip Holtz selected quarterback J’Mar Smith as the driving force behind Birmingham’s offensive success in the second half.

“When J’Mar is focused and dialed in, he’s great,” Holtz told NBC after the game. “I thought he was great tonight.”

Championship game

The Philadelphia Stars were the best team in the first iteration of the USFL, winning the league championship in two of the USFL’s three seasons. And now the stars can win the title in USFL 2.0 as well.

Philadelphia beat the New Jersey Generals 19-14 today to advance to next week’s USFL championship game.

Although the USFL hasn’t really caught on with football fans, with TVs averaging just 715,000 spectators per game and playing in front of largely empty stands in Birmingham, the quality of the game has been solid. Today’s game was a thrilling, back-and-forth battle that was in doubt until the last minute.

Unlike the regular season, in which every game was played in Birmingham, the playoffs take place in Canton, Ohio, which has a slightly larger crowd than typical regular-season USFL games.

In next week’s championship game, Philadelphia will play the winner of tonight’s game between the New Orleans Breakers and Birmingham Stallions. The Breakers-Stallions starts at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
