Gold medal game
The wait isn’t intended to be cruel, but it is.For more than three years, the US women’s hockey team worked to repeat as gold medalists at the Beijing Olympics. Instead, the Americans got to watch Canada jump over each other in celebration, while volunteers prepared the ice for the medal ceremony.
Some American players took their knees on the ice. Others looked into the abyss. Some hugs. Eventually, they reluctantly hung silver around each other’s necks and then had to watch Canada being presented with gold, as “O Canada” was played throughout the Waukesong Sports Center, with the Maple Leafs in red, white and blue. The top of the color was raised to the roofs.
“It stings for a while,” said US forward Amanda Kessel. “I will not forget this, probably, forever.”
did win gold
US The gold medal women’s hockey game between Canada and Canada on Thursday showcased a debate about whether to win a bigger game: with a hail of shots or something carefully chosen.
America fired a barrage of 40 shots at Canadian goalkeeper Ann-Renée Desbiennes—but had trouble slipping one by her. Canada took and counted about half the people.
The result was a 3–2 victory for Canada, her first gold medal in women’s hockey since 2014 after the 2018 blip, when the Americans defeated them in a penalty shootout to win their first gold medal in 20 years. The Beijing Gold is Canada’s fifth since the introduction of women’s hockey at the Olympics in 1998.
“We wanted to get high [quality] scoring chances for ourselves,” said Sarah Nurse from Canada. “I know the Americans today had a bunch of outside shots, but I know we have the best goalscorer in the world in Ann-Renee. They’re not going to score outside very often.”
“It’s redemption,” said Team Canada captain Marie-Philippe Paulin. He said getting into the gold medal game was a “hell of an effort”, possibly in reference to a play wearing a KN-95 mask during a group-stage victory over the Russian Olympic Committee, which battled a cascading COVID outbreak.Â
