America fired a barrage of 40 shots at Canadian goalkeeper Ann-Renée Desbiennes—but had trouble slipping one by her. Canada took and counted about half the people.

The result was a 3–2 victory for Canada, her first gold medal in women’s hockey since 2014 after the 2018 blip, when the Americans defeated them in a penalty shootout to win their first gold medal in 20 years. The Beijing Gold is Canada’s fifth since the introduction of women’s hockey at the Olympics in 1998.

“We wanted to get high [quality] scoring chances for ourselves,” said Sarah Nurse from Canada. “I know the Americans today had a bunch of outside shots, but I know we have the best goalscorer in the world in Ann-Renee. They’re not going to score outside very often.”

“It’s redemption,” said Team Canada captain Marie-Philippe Paulin. He said getting into the gold medal game was a “hell of an effort”, possibly in reference to a play wearing a KN-95 mask during a group-stage victory over the Russian Olympic Committee, which battled a cascading COVID outbreak.
