Fernandez

Nineteen-year-old Leylah Fernandez of Canada is in the spotlight at the U.S. Open in New York. She’s headed to Thursday’s semifinals after beating yet another star player, Elina Svitolina, after besting Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber.

Fernandez, who turned 19 on Monday, is the youngest woman to reach the U.S. Open semifinals since Maria Sharapova in 2005. A U.S. Open recap described Fernandez as having “a veteran-like ability to reset at the crucial moments.”

Sakkari

Maria Sakkari is a Greek professional tennis player, she was born on 25 July 1995. On 17 May 2021, she reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 18. Her best WTA doubles ranking is 169, achieved on 9 September 2019.

Sakkari has won one singles title on the WTA Tour at the 2019 Morocco Open, where she defeated Johanna Konta in the final. She was also semifinalist of 2017 Wuhan Open, where she defeated Caroline Wozniacki en route, her first top-10 win. In 2019, she reached another Premier 5 semifinal at the Italian Open where she defeated, among other players, Petra Kvitová. In 2020, Sakkari reached the fourth round at both the Australian Open and US Open, and in 2021 she has reached the semifinals at the French Open.

Quarterfinals

Novak Djokovic inched a little closer to history on Wednesday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the top seed and world No. 1 defeated Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the 12th US Open semifinal of his career.

The Serbian is now just two wins shy of completing the calendar-year Grand Slam, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished in men’s tennis in more than half a century. Australian Rod Laver was the last man to sweep all four majors in a single season (1969).

Alcaraz

US Open

Carlos Alcaraz’s stunning run at the U.S. Open came to a sudden and surprising end on Tuesday night when the 18-year-old from Spain retired from his quarterfinal match against Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada midway through the second set.

Auger-Aliassime took the first set, 6-3, and was leading 3-1 in the second set when Alcaraz approached the umpire and informed him that he was retiring from the match with an injury.

2020

The 2020 US Open was the 140th edition of tennis’s US Open and the second Grand Slam event of the year. It was held on outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York. The tournament was an event run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and was part of the calendars for the 2020 ATP Tour and the 2020 WTA Tour, the top professional men’s and women’s tennis circuits, respectively.
