SportsPulse: Mackenzie Salmon of USA TODAY Sports breaks down the latest NFL power rankings ahead of Week 15.

Before he could complete his first season in the NFL, Urban Mayer was fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars late Wednesday, ending his brief but turbulent reign.

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevel will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season starting with Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.

Mayer, 57, was hired to much fanfare in January by Jaguar owner Shad Khan in an effort to replace the team that finished 1-15 in 2020.

Despite having no previous NFL coaching experience, Meyer boasts impeccable college credentials after winning two national championships at the University of Florida (2006 and 2008) and one at Ohio State (2014). His overall record as college head coach was 187–32 (.854).

College record

At the University of Florida, he coached the Gators to two BCS National Championship game victories during the 2006 and 2008 seasons. By the end of the 2009 season (.842) Meyer’s win percentage was the highest of all active coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) program with at least five full seasons.

After his temporary retirement in 2011, he worked as a college football analyst for the television sports network ESPN before becoming their head coach at Ohio State. In 2014, he led the Buckeyes to their first Big Ten Conference title as part of his tenure as well as the program’s eighth national championship. [4] Mayer is one of three coaches at two universities to win a major college football national championship, along with Pop Warner and Nick Saban.

Buyout

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan issued a statement Tuesday following national outcry over head coach Urban Mayer’s actions at the Ohio bar last week.

Khan called Meyer’s actions “unforgivable”, but indicated that he is standing behind Meyer as his coach moves on.

News4Jax spoke to a Jaguar Beat reporter and a lawyer specializing in sports and entertainment law. They both said that Meyer has the potential to be a huge advantage and that it would take a lot for the team to decide to part ways with him.

Urban Mayor’s bank account may be too big to fail.

Meyer’s Jaguars future looks at its best beyond 2021, thanks to a pretty terrifying 2-11 NFL debut season with Jacksonville, which is rife with controversies, cold shoulders, and tensions within the coaches’ offices.

Drama with the Jags’ head coach began in October, when a scandalous video of the coach leaked into an Ohio restaurant after losing to the Bengals in a “Thursday Night Football” game. Since then, reports of misbehavior with the coaching staff and arguments with the players are coming to the fore.
