The UFC welterweight title is considered one of the most prestigious titles in the UFC. The inaugural welterweight champion was crowned at UFC Brazil in 1998 when Pat Miletich won the belt. Throughout the years, the likes of Carlos Newton, Matt Hughes, BJ Penn, Georges-Saint Pierre, Matt Cera, Johnny Hendrix and Robbie Lawler have all held the welterweight championship.

So far, GSP and Matt Hughes are the only two-time welterweight champions in UFC history.

At UFC 201, Tyrone Woodley defeated Robbie Lawler to win the Welterweight Championship. Woodley, who defended the title against Stephen Thompson (twice), Damien Maia and Darren Till, was defeated by Kamaru Usman by unanimous decision at UFC 235.

Kamaru Usman, who is the current UFC Welterweight Champion, has defended his title against Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal at UFC 245 and UFC 251 respectively.

Usman faced Gilbert Burns in his first title defense of 2022 and defended his title for the third time at UFC 258, defeating Burns via TKO in the third round.

I spoke with the Featherweight Champion last week and he emphasized how great it feels to go into this fight with Chan Sung Jung. He called his training camp “untrue” and showed confidence I’ve never seen before.

“You have someone who’s a finisher, he’s got an eye to find a chin and he’ll eat one to deliver. So it’s always going to be a dangerous fight,” Volkanowski said of his UFC 273 main-event opponent. Said about. “I would give him that respect, but that’s the only chance I give him. He has to land that lucky punch. That’s where I am. I would be very surprised if things don’t go my way at the level I am at now. I am at my peak and I am ready to work.”
