The tournament, being held in 11 cities in 11 UEFA countries, was originally scheduled from 12 June to 12 July 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe and rescheduled for 11 June to 11 July 2021. It retains the name UEFA Euro 2020. Portugal are the defending champions, having won the 2016 competition in France, and the video assistant referee (VAR) system makes its debut at the European Championship in this tournament.
Qualifying
There was no automatic qualifying berth, and all 55 UEFA national teams, including the 12 national teams whose countries were selected to stage matches, had to compete in the qualifiers for the 24 places at the finals tournament. As the host cities were appointed by UEFA in September 2014, before the qualifiers, it was possible for the national teams from the host cities to fail to qualify for the finals tournament.
The qualifying draw was held on 2 December 2018 at the Convention Centre Dublin in Dublin, Ireland. Themain qualifying process started in March 2019, instead of immediately in September 2018 following the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and ended in November 2019.

Scores
Italy scored twice in extra time through substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina to give the Euro 2020 title contenders a nerve-racking 2-1 victory over Austria on Saturday and a spot in the quarter-finals.
The Italians are now unbeaten for 31 consecutive matches — a new national record. Austria ran out of steam early in extra time allowing Chiesa far too much time and space in the 95th to control a Leonardo Spinazzola cross in the box and rifle home from a tight angle.
Pessina also found enough space to drill in from close range in the 105th before Sasa Kalajdzic pulled one back for Austria with a glancing header. Italy will now play either Belgium or Portugal in their quarter-final next Friday in Munich.
