After playing college basketball for the Memphis Tigers, he was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the fourth overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. Evans won the 2010 NBA Rookie of the Year Award. He was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013 before being traded to the Kings in 2013. After consecutive stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and the Indiana Pacers, Evans, who became a free agent at the end of the 2019 season, was sacked. and was disqualified from the NBA in May for violating the terms of the league’s anti-drug program, but reinstated in February 2022.

The 2017-18 season was generally a disaster for the Memphis Grizzlies, but Evans was one of the few bright spots.
He averaged 19.4 points – his highest since his rookie year in 2009-10 – and he shot a career-high 39.9 percent from the three-point boundary.
Memphis’ 115–112 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on December 23 was one of the high-water marks of Evans’ run with the team. He finished with a double-double (30 points, 11 assists) and tied for six of his 11 three-point attempts.
According to NBA.com, the Grizzlies had a 0.3 net rating with Evans on the court, and his net rating dropped to minus-11.2 when he went on the bench.
While Evans was one of Memphis’ best players, he was unlikely to be with the team for long.
The Grizzlies aren’t completely destroying things, but it’s clear that without significant upgrades to the roster they’re no longer a serious threat in the Western Conference.

Evans will be eligible to sign with a new team as soon as Friday should there be interest in his services. The former No. 4 overall pick was the 2009–10 Rookie of the Year, which included future superstars Stephen Curry and James Harden.
However, his career never again reached the heights of that stellar rookie season. His scoring declined in each of his subsequent seasons with the Sacramento Kings before joining the New Orleans Pelicans and injuries took a bit out of his prime. He was able to revive his career with a surprisingly strong stint at Memphis, but he posted the worst season of his career after the Grizzlies left for the Pacers. He shot below 39 percent off the field in his single season in Indiana and was then suspended.
The now 32-year-old Evans will likely try to return to the league and achieve some scoring and playmaking successes that made him one of the best young players in the NBA. According to Mark Stein, he is working with John Wall and Michael Beasley in Miami, and is considering potential manipulations with the teams in the buyout market, helping Evans take a high-risk, high-reward swing.
