Tyrone Devine Matthews (born May 13, 1992) is an American football security guard who is a free agent. He played college football for Louisiana State University (LSU). In college he developed a reputation for generating turnovers, setting a Southeast Conference (SEC) record with 11 career comps and earning the nickname “Honey Badger” after the mammal of the same name. In his sophomore season, he was recognized as a unanimous All-American, won the Chuck Bednaric Award as the best defensive player in college football, and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Matthews was dismissed from the LSU football program later that season due to team rules violations.

Madden rating
Matthews was rated 95 after being named a First Team All-Pro for the second year in a row. He finished 2020 with six interceptions and a fumble recovery, returning a pick for a touchdown.
This 29-year-old was a major reason why the Chiefs finished in the top 10 in defense scoring for the second year in a row.
He also stays ahead of Arizona Cardinals star Budda Baker (93 rating), who was also named a first-team All-Pro in 2020 after making 118 tackles.
New England Patriots veteran Devin McCourty was also highly respected at 93 overall, despite limited recognition elsewhere. The 33-year-old has made just one Pro Bowl in his last 10 years in the league.
Among the other big names on the list, Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams comes in at No. 6 with a 90 rating despite finishing with 9.5 sacks in 12 games last year. Minka Fitzpatrick also rated just 89 overall after another solid year anchoring the Pittsburgh Steelers secondary.
This is a significant difference from a recent survey of players, coaches and other league personnel, which rated Fitzpatrick as the No. 1 safety in the NFL, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Saints contract
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tyrone Matthews has agreed to a three-year, $33 million deal with the New Orleans Saints.
Schefter noted the deal, which still needs to be finalized, will include a fully guaranteed $18 million.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport previously reported that a deal is expected to be finalized “in the coming days.”
The veteran safety fills a critical need for New Orleans, which failed to address the situation in the 2022 NFL Draft.
The 29-year-old lived up to his previous three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, earning first-team All-Pro honors in both 2019 and 2020. He was selected for his third career Pro Bowl in 2021 after 76 tackles. , three interceptions, three rumble seizures and a sack.
Kansas City signed the defense in 2018 to help recover the 24th-ranked defense in the NFL in points allowed.
