Tyrone Devine Matthews ( born May 13, 1992) is an American football safety for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for Louisiana State University (LSU). In college he developed a reputation for generating turnovers, setting a Southeast Conference (SEC) record with 11 career comps and earning the nickname “Honey Badger” after the mammal of the same name. In his second season, he was recognized as a unanimous All-American, won the Chuck Bednaric Award as the best defensive player in college football, and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Matthews was dismissed from the LSU football program later that season due to team rules violations.

After a long NFL season begins the ritual of turning around and thinking about which players will come and go in the off-season.

With a 27–24 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, a key free agent star safety is Tyron Matthews. The 29-year-old said after the game that he needed K.C.

“I have hope. Ever since I got here, I try to be just the right kind of partner,” Matthews said after the loss. “I try to play my part. It always feels like you can make more plays for your team but I hope it works out. I have no control over that. I think whatever is under my control, I tried my best to handle it and do it with a smile. I love this team. I love this locker room. There are many coaches with whom I have a good relationship. I’m expecting.”

The Chiefs announced Sunday morning that safety Tyrann Matthews (concussion) has been removed from the injury report and will play against the Bengals in the AFC Championship game. He was originally listed as a suspect after being a full exercise participant on Thursday and Friday.

Matthews was in concussion protocol after inadvertently taking a knee on the head during last week’s playoff win over the Bills. His return could not have come at a more opportune time. Kansas City’s near-defense fought hard against Buffalo after Matthews exited, surrendering four touchdowns from Josh Allen to Gabriel Davis.

The veteran’s safety has played a key role in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl over the past two years and recently earned his third Pro Bowl selection. He collected 76 tackles, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries in the regular season.

Post game

The Kansas City Chiefs announced that star Tyrone Matthews was ruled out for the remainder of Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills after he was placed in concussion protocol.

The veteran safety finished the 2021 season with 76 tackles, six pass defended, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

For comparison, he finished the 2020 season with six interceptions, nine pass defended, one fumble recovery and 62 tackles in 15 games.

Regardless, losing Matthews for any length of time doesn’t bode well for the Chiefs, as their defense has struggled throughout the season. The team finished 27th in the league with 368.9 yards allowed per game.

Press conference

The Kansas City Chiefs will have Tyrone Matthews in the lineup for the AFC Championship Game.

Kansas City confirmed on Sunday that it has removed the injury designation from Matthews, adding that he will play against the Cincinnati Bengals after suffering an injury in the AFC Divisional Round against the Buffalo Bills.

He only logged seven snaps before crashing out of Kansas City’s dramatic 42-36 overtime win over the Bills.

Josh Allen would have fire Chiefs Secondary anyway, even if he had a healthy Matthew available. Still, it’s probably not entirely a coincidence that he threw 329 yards and four touchdowns and led the Bills offense on two late-scoring drives within the final two minutes.
