It appears Alabama is making a change at quarterback.

Sophomore Tyler Buchner is expected to start in place of Jalen Miller during the 10th-ranked Crimson Tide’s matchup at South Florida on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC), sources told ESPN’s Chris Low. Buchner, who transferred from Notre Dame in the spring, took the majority of first-team reps in practice this week, sources said.

Milroy started the Crimson Tide’s first two games, but he threw two interceptions in Alabama’s 34–24 loss to Texas last week.

Buchner played under Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees last season when both were at Notre Dame. He played in mop-up duty during Alabama’s season-opening 56–7 victory over Middle Tennessee, completing 3 of 5 passes for 27 yards.

Buchner began the previous season as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback and was injured in the second game of the season. He returned for the Gator Bowl, throwing five touchdowns as well as three interceptions, including a pick-six, in Notre Dame’s 45–38 victory over South Carolina.

He is the son of Todd and Audrey Buchner, both of whom were athletes in their own right (according to AL.com). His father is white, while his mother is reportedly of Korean descent.

High School

Quarterback Tyler Buchner shocked everyone earlier this week by announcing he was leaving Notre Dame and entering the transfer portal. After visiting the University of Alabama on Wednesday, he made his decision and announced Thursday morning that he would commit to play for the Crimson Tide next season.

The quarterback will now reunite with his former offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, who left Notre Dame for the same job at Alabama earlier this year.

Tyler Buchner was a four-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class. He played for three years at The Bishop’s School in La Jolla, California. He transferred to Helix High School where he intended to play his senior year but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the season was canceled and he did not play football his final year of high school.

Although he got some starts his freshman and sophomore years of high school, it wasn’t until his junior season that he really showed what he could do.

In 13 starts for Bishop School, he threw for an impressive 4,474 passing yards and 53 passing touchdowns. He also ran for 1,610 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns. He chose to commit to the University of Notre Dame and accepted offers from other schools, including the University of Alabama.

Transfer

According to 247Sports, Tyler Buchner is expected to replace Jalen Miller as Alabama’s starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide’s Week 3 game against South Florida. The Notre Dame transfer will take over after Miller started the first two games of the season.

Alabama’s loss to Texas in Week 2 will be the catalyst for change. While coach Nick Saban has not yet announced or hinted at a change in starter, he certainly did not give Miller a vote of confidence this week, even saying after Saturday’s loss that he would like to have another start in that game. Considering playing QB.

When Saban was asked Wednesday if he would make a change at QB, he said, “We evaluate every position every week. If guys want security at their position, they need to play well.” “Everyone on our team knows that. I think everyone has responded in a positive way to try to get better and improve. We’ll constantly evaluate that situation like we do every other situation. “

Miller passed for 255 yards and two touchdowns, but he completed only 51.9% of his throws and threw two interceptions, one of which was at Alabama’s 5-yard line near the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Longhorns took a two-point lead by scoring a touchdown on their ensuing offensive play.
