Press conference
There are plenty of faults to go around for the 49ers’ 19-10 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Soldier Field, but Trey Lance is already shouldering more than his fair share.
Lance begins his postgame press conference by taking responsibility for missed opportunities on offense. The Bears scored 19 unanswered points when the 49ers shut them down in the first half, inciting the quarterback’s dismay and dismay for the second year after the game.
“Made a lot of mistakes,” Lance said on Sunday. “The defense kept us in the game. There was a big lapse for Tyler Croft in the end zone. Trying to bowl the perfect ball. He should have fixed it. He was open.
“Turned the ball. Took a sack that took us out of field goal range. Dibo [Samuel] missed third. Missed another third for John [Jennings]. Too many mistakes right now. Definitely Too many things to clean up.”
Injury
Trey Lance caught a football, flipped it from the room inside Levi’s stadium, and he worked a grip on it to try to live it up again for a year to pray how to throw it. Had to catch it a little longer ago. Her index finger was almost to the nose of the ball, her middle finger was off the lace and her ring finger sat above and between the first and second cross-laces.
That’s not how someone would tell a quarterback to do that. But Lance had no choice.
Sucks
On a wet and muddy day in Chicago, the two young quarterbacks struggled for the most part of the game. But in the end, Bears quarterback Justin Fields did enough to lead his team over Trey Lance and the 49ers.
The Bears’ offense came alive in the second half, and Fields threw late touchdown passes to Dante Pettis and Equinemius St. Brown as Chicago managed to move the ball despite the dire weather conditions. The Bears won 19-10.
Those weather conditions certainly affected the Bears – kicker Cairo Santos, who has long complained about conditions in the troop field, missed two extra points – but they affected the 49ers more. Lance struggled to do anything on the marshy ground.
The Bears start the season 1-0 and they have to feel good about that they were able to come together in the second half of a tough game. The 49ers start 0-1, and if they can’t turn things around in a hurry, questions will arise as to whether Lance is up to the task.
