Lance was redshirted for the 2018 season, but played two games where he recorded two rushing touchdowns. He was named a starter in 2019 and led the Bison to the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game and named MVP in a 28–20 victory. Lance finished the season with 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns and 287 passes without interceptions, completing 192 passes, an NCAA record for most passing attempts in a season without interceptions. He ran 169 times for a distance of 1,100 yards.
The Lance was set to resume in 2020 before the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His only game in that season was in a single game against Central Arkansas in October 2020. Lance threw for two touchdowns and ran for an extra two, while throwing the only interception of his college career. Bison was scheduled to make the rest of the season in early 2021, but Lance announced after the game that he would be dropping out to prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft.
Slide

Trey Lance’s only carry against the Packers in Friday’s preseason game was not by design. The quarterback stepped out of the pocket, reset his feet, then flew for a seven-yard lead that ended in a slide. The ending was the most important part of the play. This was also the first.
Lance, who took several big hits in his minimum playing time last year as he tried to run through tacklers, tried to avoid a hit for the first time on Friday night.
