Travis Michael Kelsey (born October 5, 1989) is an American football tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft and later won Super Bowl LIV with the team over the San Francisco 49ers. He played college football at the University of Cincinnati. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and a three-time First Team All-Pro selection. Restructure
On Tuesday, ESPN’s Field Yates reported that the Kansas City Chiefs have renegotiated Travis Kelce’s contract, creating $3.455 million in cap space in 2022.
According to salary cap site Spottrack, Kelsey was earning a base salary of $7.5 million in 2022, with a cap hit of $11.9 million. This includes his basic salary, a $3 million bonus and a previous contract restructuring of $1.4 million.
Kelsey will have about $4.6 million in unpaid base salary for the rest of the season. So the Chiefs give Kelsey a check for that amount – but having done so, they can now spread that money against Cap in 2022 and over the last three years of his contract. The move would increase the cap hit (and dead money figures) of the tight end by about $1.15 million in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
How much cap space the chiefs had available for them prior to the move is unknown. That’s because we never know how much the team is actually spending. Based on published details about player contracts, sites such as Spottrack or OvertheCap can only estimate how many space teams actually have. Details about contracts may be misunderstood, mis-rounded or incorrectly reported.
It makes little difference when teams have millions of dollars available in cap space—but when a team’s salary cap space is running close to the edge (as Kansas City has been since the start of the season), it can sometimes- Sometimes it means that the salary-cap site will report to the team with negative cap space.
Now, however, the heads are conveniently above the hat. With the move, Spottrack now estimates the team has $3.1 million in cap space.
