Motorsports mogul Tony Stewart and Top Fuel-driving fiancée Leah Pruett announced Thursday that they are launching their own NHRA team and taking three-time Funny Cars champion teammate Matt Hagan with them.
The exit of Pruett and Hagan left Funny Car driver and previous NHRA champion Ron Capps as the only remaining driver on the six-driver team in the DSR from 2020.
And while John Force Racing and Kalitta Motorsports—the two remaining big teams at the top of the NHRA food chain—have yet to publicly tip their hands about their 2022 plans, it’s clear that there is a change in the way sports teams do business. Starting to see a significant change.

Tony Stewart’s racing resume is an omnivore from both the driver’s seat and the management position, as he has managed to penetrate almost all corners of motorsports in his legendary career. Now, Stewart is adding another section to his racing resume as the owner of a new NHRA team.

On Thursday, Tony Stewart announced that he would be joining NHRA as a car owner in 2022, making two full-time entries in two different divisions under the Tony Stewart Racing banner. Stewart’s team will field a Top Fuel Car for Leah Pruett and three-time Funny Car team and defending Funny Car champion Matt Hagen. Both drivers have been seduced by one of the NHRA’s powerhouse teams, Don Schumacher Racing

While he played the dual role of driver and team owner in the NASCAR Cup Series until 2016, this was hardly a new challenge for Tony, having already shown that he was in business as a team owner at both the United States Auto Club. can take care of. (USAC) and World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Series. His team, Tony Stewart Racing (TSR), makes an entry in the Woo Sprint Car Series, fielding an additional sprint car for Stewart who has now relinquished his driving duties in the NASCAR Cup Series.

At WoO, TSR fields the No. 15 CarQuest Auto Parts Sprint Car for ten-time champion Donnie Schatz and the No. 14 Rush Truck Center Sprint Car for Stewart.

Since its formation, TSR has earned twenty-eight owner championships, the most recent of which was Schatz’s World of Outlaw Championships in 2018.

Tony Stewart, a team owner in several racing series, is adding an NHRA team to his portfolio of businesses, the NASCAR Hall of Famer announced Thursday. Tony Stewart Racing will field a Top Fuel car for a fun car for Stewart’s fiancée, Leah Pruett, and Matt Hagen.

Stewart and Pruett, who plan to marry next month after the NHRA season ends, began discussing plans for a team after Stewart became a frequent spectator and cheerleader at Pruett’s Drag Race.

Stewart said that he “wanted to do more than just stand up and be a trophy wife next to Leah.”

Keeping Pruett and Hagen away from Don Schumacher Racing is an important step. Pruett has won nine NHRA races and Hagan is a 39-time race winner who is also a three-time Funny Cars champion.

“It’s undeniably going to make up for what NHRA needs,” Pruett said. “I’m excited to race with my future husband and be back on track so I really enjoy racing.”
