The NBA announced Thursday that longtime NBA referee Tony Brown has died of pancreatic cancer. He was 55 years old.
“We are sustained by a constant flow of love and support through this journey of developing strength, acceptance and peace,” his wife Tina said in a statement. “We ask that you join us in that spirit as we prepare to celebrate Tony’s life.”
Brown has appeared in 1,071 regular-season games, 35 playoff games, two All-Star Games, and appeared in the 2020 NBA Finals. After being diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in 2021, he returned to work at the Replay Center during the 2021–22 season.

According to the league, over the course of 20 seasons, the Browns appeared in more than 1,100 regular-season games and 35 playoff games.
His NBA Finals refereeing debut came during the 2019-20 season, and he also helped pilot the 2021 NBA All-Star Game in Atlanta, which honored historically black colleges and universities.
“Tony Brown was one of the most accomplished referees in the NBA and an inspiration to his colleagues,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. “The entire NBA family mourns the passing of Tony.”
Brown was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, according to Silver, who said the referee went through several rounds of treatment.

Brown appeared in 1,110 regular-season games and 35 playoff games in 20 seasons as an NBA staff officer. He first featured in the NBA Finals during the 2019–20 season, when LeBron James and the Lakers defeated the Miami Heat 4–2.
