As a coach, Adams hasn’t been nearly as successful. Once billed as the future Arsenal manager – a prediction made when all legendary players and leaders retire – he has gone almost entirely under the radar. Adams is known as someone who sometimes reappears to share his latest controversial opinion about his former club, or to be the subject of parody on social media. Meanwhile, he will pursue his next obscure business. He has traveled to the English lower leagues, the Netherlands, Azerbaijan, China and Spain on his journey to find the right job for himself.

His post-playing career began in the humble surroundings of Wycombe Wanderers. Following his hugely successful career, which he capped off with another league and cup double, Adams took over as manager from Laurie Sanchez in 2003. Whatever qualms Adams had, he had an undeniable presence. Nevertheless, one thought this was to be the first step on the road for Arsenal, crushed by the harsh reality that Wycombe was suffering the consequences, and that the club was falling down the League One table. Unable to reverse the collapse, Adams’ side were relegated to League Two. Then, the following November, Adams resigned, citing personal reasons.

Instead of being ready to take her to the next English club or complaining as a TV pundit that she couldn’t get a job, Adams sought education. After exploring options in Italy, France and Belgium, he accepted a trainee role at Feyenoord, where he would serve with their under-21 squad. “My conversations with the management of Feyenoord gave me the most welcome sentiments,” he told the Rotterdam Dagblad newspaper at the time.

Position

Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams confirmed he had recently undergone minor heart surgery, saying the procedure saved his life after suffering chest pains.

Joe Strange of MailOnline reported that the Gunners icon felt ill while exercising at home in Azerbaijan, where he is Kabbalah FK’s director of football, and was taken to hospital by medics for going under the knife.

Recalling his ordeal, Adams said:

After experiencing some severe chest pain while exercising in Azerbaijan and contacted by doctors from the Gabala Club, I went to The Medical Plaza Hospital in Baku, where I was admitted for an angiogram, and then a severe blockage. After diagnosis of vein, immediate angioplasty was performed.

The superb surgeons at Medical Plaza did a wonderful job – as my cardiologist in the UK reiterates to me. I know very well that I would not be alive without the talents of Dr. Uzair Rahimov and his team: a small heart operation saved my life.

Number

He played 674 matches for Arsenal (only David O’Leary has played more) and was the most successful captain in the club’s history.
