When Cheryl Dody isn’t driving seven hours to Adelaide every week to watch her son Tom play for the Crows, she’s busy making blankets for her teammates’ little children.
This is why Dodie believes she is “the ultimate footie mom.”
“When I got drafted here (to SA) I played SANFL for two years and I think they (mum Cheryl and dad Steve) probably missed two SANFL games out of about 35,” Dodie said.
“Then when I got to AFL level, now it’s become their community and something they really enjoy.
“I still think they’re a little crazy, a little crazy, but I appreciate their commitment very much.”
Dodie and Cheryl spoke to AFC media about the bond they share ahead of the Crows’ clash with St Kilda at Adelaide Oval on Mother’s Day this Sunday.
Injury
Adelaide has lost key defender Tom Dowdy for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury in his right knee.
It is a major blow to the finals hopes of the Crows, who have dropped out of the top eight after a shock defeat to Gold Coast.
Doddy suffered the injury in the first leg of Saturday night’s defeat to the Suns.
Scans in Adelaide on Sunday confirmed the injury and Doady will require surgery.
Dodi also suffered an ACL tear in his left knee during the first round of the 2019 season, sidelining him for the remainder of the year.
“Unfortunately this is not the news we were expecting and scans have confirmed that Tom has ruptured his ACL,” Crows high performance manager Darren Burgess said in a club statement.
“He was clearly in some discomfort after coming off the field on Saturday night and we have now confirmed the injury which will rule him out for the remainder of the season.
“We all share Tom’s disappointment and we are supporting him as best we can as he prepares for surgery and then rehabilitation.
