An intense competitor, Brands’ wrestling career with the University of Iowa included a 158–7–2 record and an undefeated season in 1991 where he was 45–0. He was a four-time All-American, three-time NCAA Champion, three-time Big Ten Conference champion, and outstanding wrestler at the 1992 NCAA Tournament. His twin brother, Terry, was also an Olympic medalist and a standout in Iowa.
Internationally, Brands won the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in freestyle at 136.6 pounds; gold medal at the 1993 World Freestyle Championships in Toronto; two World Cup gold medals (1994 and 1995); and gold at the 1995 Pan American Games. He won four US national titles (1993–96) and made four straight US world or Olympic teams (1993–96). He was named 1993 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, 1993 John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler and 1993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2001.

Fran McCaffrey’s total compensation for the 2020–21 season was $2.5 million, according to the status of the Iowa salary book, and will increase to $2.9 million in the upcoming 2021–22 season, according to his contract obtained by The Gazette. McCaffrey’s compensation is expected to increase by $100,000 each year, except from 2022-23 to 2023-24, when it will increase to $300,000.
In addition, McCaffrey will receive a longevity incentive of $100,000 by August 1, 2022, and $200,000 in 2023. Their total compensation is expected to be $3.7 million by 2028.
