CLEARWATER, Fla. — There’s a photo that UCLA coach Kelly Inoue-Perez has in a still that remains highly emotional, as it helps explain how the Bruins landed one of their future superstars.
A superstar who has a famous superstar uncle or two.
In the photo, 9-year-old Maya Brady stands front and center in UCLA gear, smiling big. The entire team dressed in uniform is smiling around him. Inouye-Perez is closed on one side of the photo. Maya’s “Uncle Tommy” Brady is also at left in the photo.
Maya Brady fell in love with UCLA softball after the Bruins won the Women’s College World Series in 2010. Already a talented softball player in his own right, Brady zeroed in on one player in particular: freshman outfielder Bibi Bates, a player who looked like him, leading him to believe it was possible that he too. One day he could play at UCLA.
He attended summer softball camp at UCLA, and then his traveling ball coach, Mike Stith, arranged to take young Brady to a game and meet-up with the team. Her mother, Maureen, sister and uncle (yes Tom Brady) accompany her on the trip, and she finally gets the chance to meet her idol.

Despite being traded in the gridiron for the link this week, Tom Brady wasn’t one to ignore what’s going on in the diamonds.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback competed with Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in the sixth edition of Capital One’s The Match on Wednesday. A quartet of NFL superstars took part in a round of exhibition match-play golf in Las Vegas, and it was broadcast live on TNT with commentary and interviews.
Speaking with host Ernie Johnson, Brady decided to turn the attention to UCLA softball, which plays against Texas in the Women’s College World Series on Thursday at 9 a.m. PST. Brady’s niece, Maya, is a redshirt sophomore starting center fielder for the Bruins, batting from the No. 5 hole and second on the team with 13 home runs.
Brady said he plans to watch the UCLA-Texas game with his family on Thursday morning, though he mistakenly claimed he was playing Duke, who went out of the blue and gold in the previous round.
Brady also spoke about how his older sisters were the star athletes of the family and he was known as his younger brother. Tom’s sister and Maya’s mother, Muarin, became an All-American pitcher at Fresno State.
Maya Brady received UCLA in 2020 and immediately won Softball America’s Freshman Player of the Year after leading her team in home runs and RBIs in a COVID-shortened campaign. After earning All-Pac-12 and All-American honors in 2021, she returned in 2022 to continue filling out the stat sheet.

Tom Brady isn’t the only member of his family trying to win the championship.
His niece, Maya Brady, is competing in the College World Series with the UCLA softball team, looking to bring home another title for the Brady Bunch. Tom’s sister Maureen’s daughter Maya got a shout-out on national television from her seven-time Super Bowl Championship-winning uncle on Wednesday while he was competing in “The Match.”
“I saw my niece play for UCLA in the College World Series yesterday morning,” Brady said. “We’re all going to try to go home to see it.”

Twenty years ago, the player who would become the greatest quarterback of all time made his Hall of Fame-caliber future clear with a performance from the NFL Combine.
This is what not every NFL team named the Patriots can say about their glimpse of Tom Brady a few months before the 2000 NFL Draft.
We all know by now that the opposite happened. No one saw a record six Super Bowl rings in their future, thanks to Brady’s Combine being shown to be the best average ever. Brady famously slipped to number 199 for the Patriots in the sixth round of the draft. Of the six QBs selected prior to the Michigan Product, only one appeared in the Pro Bowl (Mark Bulger, No. 168 by the Saints).
Brady’s story now serves as an annual reminder to NFL Draft prospects who don’t test the charts that their ability is not defined by anything like a 40-yard dash, a vertical jump, a wonderlic test score, or a combination.
