700 td
The storybook career of Tom Brady added a few more must-read chapters on Sunday night.
In a fashion almost as cool as Brady himself, the Buccaneers quarterback found receiver Breshad Perriman for a game-winning touchdown to notch his 700th career passing TD (regular season and playoffs combined) for a thrilling 33-27 overtime win against the Bills.
It marked just the second time in Brady’s career (Week 7, 2003) that he’s tossed the deciding score in OT.
“It’s pretty rare, you know? But it was very cool,” Brady told reporters. “I’d much rather not have it come down to that, but, in the end, they all count the same, you know? And we got to learn from it and we got to move on and, obviously, we’re playing for a division championship next week which is pretty exciting for all of us.”
Ed oliver
Tom Brady appears to have beef with former Westfield High School and University of Houston star Ed Oliver.
In the first quarter of Sunday’s Tampa Bay-Buffalo game, Brady kept the ball for a first down. After Buffalo’s Jerry Hughes, who also is from Houston and starred at Fort Bend Austin High School, tried to drag Brady backwards, Oliver stepped over the Buccaneers quarterback, which seemed to infuriate Brady. The 44-year-old Brady stood up and nearly toppled Oliver, who swung his arm at the quarterback. Brady then gave Oliver a two-handed shove. Oliver returned fire with a shove of his own before the two were separated.
Overtime record
In three overtime playoff games over the course of his career, Brady is now 3-0, and his opponents in those games never had a chance to even touch the football.
The rules have changed since Brady got Adam Vinatieri into field-goal range in his first playoff start in January 2002. Back then it was sudden death, first score wins. The rule has changed. The decade has changed. But Brady’s teammates were as confident as ever in the 41-year-old when an overtime situation popped up Sunday.
Record vs bills
Add another record to Tom Brady’s resume. The future Hall of Fame quarterback surpassed New Orleans Saints great Drew Brees to become the league’s all-time completions leader.
Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, needed only 18 completions heading into Tampa Bay’s game against the Buffalo Bills to pass Brees, who finished his career with 7,142 completions.
Brady connected with wide receiver Mike Evans on a 20-yard strike with 1:38 to go in the first half to get the 7,143rd completion of his career. The pass and catch gave the Buccaneers a first down at Buffalo’s 2-yard line. Two plays later, Brady scored on a quarterback sneak to give the Bucs a 24-3 lead.
