TAMPA, Fla. — Bruce Arian is stepping down as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after three seasons and moving into a front-office role with the organization, the team announced Wednesday night.
Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will replace Arian as head coach. A league source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Bucks finalized a new, five-year head-coaching contract with Boles on Wednesday.
Ariane told ESPN that he doesn’t see the change as a retirement.
“No, going to the front office,” he said in a text message. “I’m still working.”
Ariane played a key role in evaluating the draft’s prospects, and a move to the Front Office ensures it will continue. His new position will be senior football advisor.
Despite numerous health concerns throughout his career, the 69-year-old said the move was in no way motivated by his health. Ariane and the Buccaneers had been working on a succession plan for the past several weeks, and Ariane briefed the players and members of their coaching staff on the news before the team was announced.
Ariane went 31-18 (.633) in three campaigns with Tampa Bay, the highest win percentage of any coach in the Buccaneers’ history, and led the team to a Super Bowl LV victory after the 2020 season. He won five playoff games with the Bucs; Previous Tampa Bay coaches combined won six.
“I have spent the last 50 years of my life on the sidelines in some form or another as a football coach. Today, I have decided to move into another role with the Buccaneers Front Office, assisting [Gen] [Manager] Jason Licht and his employees,” Ariane said in a statement. “I love football. I love the relationships, the strategy, the competition – everything. It’s been one hell of a ride, but I know it’s the right time for me to make this change.”
A source told ESPN that Bowles was informed Monday about Ariane’s decision to step down from her position and promote her. Ariane has long held Bowles as her own.

Throughout his career, both as a player and a coach, Bowles has amassed significant wealth due to his achievements. Before the new deal, it was worth $25 million by some estimates.
Bowles began his coaching career with the Miami Dolphins and served until becoming the team’s interim head coach. He then moved to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he became the team’s secondary coach. He then became the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals. His success there led him to win Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014.
Following his success as an assistant coach and a defensive coordinator, the New York Jets as head coach. After failing to achieve continuity, he parted ways with the organization in 2018. It was then that he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his current role as defensive coordinator.
Coaching career
After retiring as a player, Bowles was a member of the Green Bay Packers’ player personnel staff under Ron Wolf in 1995 and 1996. He was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Morehouse College in 1997, and the defensive coordinator and defensive back coach at Grambling State from 1998 to 1999. He was the defensive back coach for the New York Jets in 2000, the Cleveland Browns in 2004, and the Dallas Cowboys from 2005–2007. He was the Browns’ defensive nickel package coach from 2001–2003.
Bowles was appointed by the Miami Dolphins as the team’s secondary coach and assistant head coach on January 23, 2008. The Eagles announced on October 16, 2012 that they had fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo from their duties and named Todd Bowles as their new defensive coordinator. Under Bowles, the Eagles finished ninth in the pass defense and twenty-third in the rushing defense even in longtime head coach Andy Reid’s final season with the team.
On January 18, 2013, Bowles was appointed as the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals. On 31 January 2015, he was named Associated Press’s (AP) Assistant Coach of the Year for his efforts in the 2014 season.
