Toby Roberts won Great Britain’s 14th gold in Paris and his first medal in sport climbing at the Olympics with dramatic wins in the boulder and lead events.

When Japanese world silver medalist and favorite Sorato Anaraku slid down the 15-meter wall to give the Englishman the victory, the 19-year-old had his head in his hands and couldn’t believe his victory.

Roberts, who improved on a DIY climbing wall he built in his parents’ garden, was third in the first part of the competition, which competed on four boulders.

He then placed himself temporarily in first place by scoring 92.1 out of 100, trailing only Anraku.

Anraku needed only 86 points on the lead wall to give Roberts the silver medal, but she lost her grip, resulting in gasps from the crowd of 6,000.

Olympics

Prime-time vlogger, F1 lover and teenage climber extraordinaire Toby Roberts is Britain’s latest star in the new Olympic sport.

The 19-year-old girl from Elsted, Surrey took off like a duck on water.

He achieved senior prominence when he became the first Briton in 28 years to win a major World Cup medal during the 2022 Ratho World Cup.

And Roberts became the first British male climber to book an Olympic place with victory at the 2023 European qualifiers in Laval.

At Paris 2024 he won Team GB’s first Olympic climbing title with gold in the bouldering and lead events.

How old is

He is 19 year’s old. A child prodigy, Roberts became the youngest Briton to climb the 8a Raindogs route at Malham Cove at the age of just 10, passionate about progressing in both indoor and outdoor climbing.

Cupping the back of his head with his tired, chalk-encrusted hands, disbelief washed over Toby Roberts’ face.

Not even the 6,000 fans at Le Bourget on their feet and cheering, it seemed, could quite convince the 19-year-old Briton that on a Parisian summer’s day, he had become the men’s sport Boulder & Lead combined sport climbing Olympic gold medallist.

And yet, that was precisely what had happened.

In a field featuring some of the biggest stars in the sport, including Czech superstar Adam Ondra and Jakob Schubert, Roberts was the one who had produced the complete package.

Sitting third (63.1) after the morning’s cut-throat Boulder section, the Surrey-born climber found himself well placed heading into the Lead route.
