Trent Jordan Watts (born October 11, 1994) is an American football outside linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at the University of Wisconsin, and was drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. While Watt’s record comes in the NFL’s first 17-game season, he tied the mark in only 15 games played. He missed the Steelers’ Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Week 11 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Apart from two missed games, Watt’s dominance has extended the entire season. In the three games he played, he was only held without a sack and he had cut the sack five times. On Thursday, multiple reports surfaced that both sides agreed to a four-year, $112 million contract extension with $80 million guaranteed, making him the NFL’s highest-paid defensive player. Watt’s reported annual salary ($28 million) eclipses the five-year, $135 million deal ($27 million annually), with the Los Angeles Chargers signing Joey Bossa last offseason. Watts, 26, who was on option for the fifth year of his rookie contract that would have paid him around $10 million, was “catching up” at training camp, reporting but not practicing. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday he was “optimistic” the sides would agree a long-term contract before the start of the season. Watt participated fully in the exercise for the first time on Wednesday.
