Did break the record

While Watt’s record comes in the NFL’s first 17-game season, he tied the mark in only 15 games played. He missed the Steelers’ Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Week 11 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Apart from two missed games, Watt’s dominance has extended the entire season. In the three games he played, he was only held without a sack and he had cut the sack five times. He made a strong push for the home stretch record, collecting four sacks in a Monday Night Football win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 17.

Watt also surpassed three players who had previously been No. 2 on the single-season dismissal list. Justin Houston (2014), Jared Allen (2011) and Mark Gastineau (1984) all had 22 sacks in a season. JJ Watt, TJ. Ka’s brother is 8th on the list with two 20.5-sack seasons (2012 and 2014).

With his record-setting season underway, T.J. JJ may join in more rare company as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year recipient.

Sack review

In general, discarded plays do not usually result in a defensive sack of any kind. An aborted play would be Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley leaving himself on the play, if such a league took place as determined.

The NFL will review plays after the game if the stat is of national interest, or if the team requests it.

Steelers spokesman Burt Lawten told The Action Network that as soon as the play happened, the team asked to look at the play for statistical purposes.

After determining that the stat should be reviewed, the Elias Sports Bureau takes over the process. That review won’t start until the week’s games have closed. In Week 18, that means after Sunday Night Football between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Los Angeles Chargers.

At the time of publication, BetMGM had not placed any bets on Watts to break the record.

Sportsbook offered props on Watt to break the record. At BetMGM, the Watt to record opened at 180 and closed at -125. DraftKings posted the line at -130.

When asked after the game, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger backed off his teammate, saying the record should be his.

Sack Record

Leaning against a white cinderblock wall in the visitors media room after defeating the Baltimore Ravens in overtime 16-13, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had a message for the NFL.

“Give him half the sack,” Roethlisberger told outside linebacker T.J. Watt on the podium. “Start the petition.”

Just hours earlier, Watt surpassed Michael Strahan’s NFL single-season sack record with 23 seconds in the first half. Watt had at least one more, which would have given him sole rights to the record.

“I don’t know if any of it hit me,” Watt said of tying the record. “It’s not just me. There are many other people involved, great players, coaches, schemes and there are so many selfless people in the locker room that allow me to make plays. So this record is not just mine.”

Fiance

Pittsburgh Steelers star linebacker T.J. Watt and former Wisconsin Badgers All-American soccer player Dani Rhodes have announced their engagement.

Watt, a Peugeot native, proposed to Rhodes, who grew up in Waukesha, last Thursday with a picturesque lake setting as the backdrop.

“I am the luckiest man in the world!!” Watt, 26, posted three photos of the proposal to his Instagram account, including a photo of him down on one knee.

“Yeah. Yes. Yes.” posted Rhodes, who was overwhelmed with emotion as soon as Watt popped the question.
