Richmond are tasked with receiving GWS pair Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper to hand four first-round draft picks, revealing the latter’s demands from New South Wales.
In what is seen as an imminent double coup for the Tigers, the Tigers are set to land the two on seven-year deals after their choice to move to Punt Road.
GWS is understood to be seeking a pair of first-round picks for Taranto’s services as his contract expires, while Hopper, who has been contracted, will be asked to make similar requests to the Giants, according to The Herald Sun. value is required.
Position
Richmond have their man to officially become the Tigers through a trade with GWS midfielder Tim Taranto.
The Tigers secured Taranto by sending the Giants 12 and 19 picks in this year’s National Draft instead of the 24-year-old.
He signed a seven-year deal with Richmond.
Taranto were picked in the 2016 national draft with pick number 2 and have played 114 games at Orange in the past six seasons.
The Sandringham Dragons product won the Kevin Sheedy Medal as the Giants’ best and fairest in 2019, a year in which GWS made the Grand Finals.
The on-baller averaged 25.5 disposals, 3.8 clearances and 4.8 tackles from 16 games in 2022.
Contract
The large-bodied midfielder is being priced in the range of $650,000 to $700,000 a year on his next contract.
This season Taranto has split his time in the midfield and forward line, spending time filling the void left by Toby Greene during his early-season suspension.
However, since interim coach Mark McVeigh took over from Leon Cameron, he has spent more time in midfield, including a 67% win over Hawthorne.
Earlier this year it was reported that the Giants would find it difficult to re-sign both Taranto and fellow midfielder Jacob Hopper, with the latter contracted until the end of next year.
Age
The 24-year-old won the Giants’ Best and Fair award in 2019, when the club lost the grand final to Richmond.
“Tim is a player we admire for his clear on-field ability and for his work rate, high standards and leadership qualities,” Blair Hartley, Richmond’s general manager of football talent, said in a statement.
“At only 24 years old Tim has great football ahead and we are delighted that he will have the opportunity to do so in yellow and black.
“We think Tim will be a very popular player among his new teammates, coaches, staff and of course, our supporter base.”
