Timothy James DeRuiter ( born January 3, 1963) is an American football coach and former player. He is the defensive coordinator for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and previously he was the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for the California Golden Bears from 2017 to 2020 and the Fresno State Bulldogs’ head football coach from 2012 to 2016.

Oregon
Oregon’s two defensive assistants lead the Big 12.
According to The Athletic, defensive coordinator Tim Deruter and Safari coach Marcel Yates, who spent the 2021 season with the Ducks, are expected to move to Texas Tech.
FootballScoop first reported the move to DeRuyter, which is in the first year of a three-year deal worth $825,000 a year. Yates is earning $480,000 this season and was supposed to make $500,000 next season.
They each earned a $10,000 bonus to help Oregon win the Pac-12 North and should earn an additional $15,000 at the Alamo Bowl, which is not immediately clear whether they will continue to do so.
With Mario Cristóbal leaving UO for Miami, DeRouter was owed 70% of his salary, or $577,500, and Yates owed 60%, or $300,000, for the following year, more than what he earns elsewhere.
Oregon (10-3) ranked 37th in run defense (130.5 yards per game), 60th in total defense (371.8 years) and scoring (25.5 points), 88th in pass defense (241.4 years) and 118th in third-down defense is on. (45.7%).
The Ducks play a home-to-house debut against Texas Tech in 2023–24 starting in Lubbock.

Salary
Oregon’s new defensive coordinator signed his three-year, $2.5 million contract on Friday, two days after the Ducks signed the highest-ranked recruiting class in the program’s history.
According to a contract issued to Register-Guard following an open records request, DeRuyter’s base salary is $825,000 annually, with up to an additional $125,000 available in performance incentives.
The former Fresno State coach’s pay will be reduced by 10% as of June 30 as part of the athletic department’s pay cut to help control costs during the pandemic.
Mario Cristobal hired Dereuter, California’s co-defensive coordinator for the past four seasons, to replace Andy Avalos.
Defense
After just one season in Eugene, it appears the Ducks will be in the market for a new defensive coordinator and Safari coach. Tim Dereuter is expected to become the next defensive coordinator at Texas Tech, according to a report from Footballscoop.com on Wednesday morning.
DeRuyter would move back to Texas State, where he served as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach from 2010 to 2011, but this time under Red Raiders head coach Joy McGuire. While at Oregon, the Ducks’ defense showed glimpses of greatness, especially at the start of the 2021 season as the team led the nation in turnover margin before being hit with a massive wave of injuries.
Tim DeRuiter is in his fourth season at Cal in 2020 and his first as the team’s associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator. He is working with Kyle’s outside linebackers in his third campaign. DeRuyter is in his 31st season as a collegiate coach, which includes his four-plus seasons as head coach at Fresno State (2012–16) and his 20th campaign as a defensive coordinator or co-defensive coordinator.
DeRuyter has helped organize dramatic improvements to the defensive side of the ball in his first three seasons as defensive coordinator at Cal, including reducing opponents’ scores to 127 prior to his arrival (42.6 ppg). The number had reached 22 (20.4 ppg) in 2018. ppg) and number 33 in 2019 (21.9 ppg). As of the end of the 2019 season, Cal has held off 18 of his last 20 opponents on 25 points or less. The stretch began at Oregon State on October 20, 2018 and reached 14 straight games to become the longest active run in the nation before ending in Utah on October 26, 2019.
Contract
Tim DeRuiter will earn about the same as his last known salary at Cal in Oregon.
Oregon’s newly signed defensive coordinator signed a three-year contract for $825,000 annually until January 2024, according to documents released by the UO in response to an open record request.
This is in line with DeRuyter’s earnings at Cal in the latest available year 2019-20, and below the $865,000 Andy Avalos was due to earn at Oregon this year, before he left to become head coach at Boise State.
DeRuyter’s contract includes up to $125,000 in performance bonuses, similar to UO’s other football assistants. These included bonuses for winning the Pac-12 North ($10,000), winning the Pac-12 Championship Game ($15,000), competing in any bowl game with at least seven regular-season wins ($15,000), and winning the New Year’s Game. Competing in six games is involved. $15,000), compete in a college football playoff semifinal ($10,000), win a CFP semifinal ($25,000), and win a CFP national championship ($35,000).
If the Duck has an Academic Progression Rate score of at least 985, he is also eligible for an annual $5,000 bonus.
Should Oregon fire DeRuyter, his buyout is 70% of his remaining guaranteed pay. If Mario Cristóbal leaves Oregon, DeRuyter will also receive 70% of his annual or remaining salary, whichever is less.
If DeRuyter were to leave UO before the end of February 2023, he would have to buy out 25% of his annual salary, unless he does so to become head coach of the FBS or head coach of the NFL or play-calling coordinator.
