Terry Venables: What did die of| Cause of death| Illness

Former England manager Terry Venables has died aged 80 after a “long illness”, according to a statement from his family.

In a statement released through the League Managers Association, his family said: “We are absolutely devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father, who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.

“We would request that privacy be granted at this incredibly sad time so that we can mourn the loss of the lovely man we were so fortunate to have in our lives.”

As a player he made over 500 appearances for Chelsea, Tottenham, QPR and Crystal Palace, but it was as a coach that he made his real mark, also managing Palace and QPR.

England as a country supported Venables’ national team at Euro ’96. This summer football almost came home as the team spectacularly defeated the Netherlands 4–1 – a performance which Venables himself described as “perfection: my most thrilling experience in football” – only at Wembley. Lost to Germany on penalties in the semi-finals.

Cause of death

Terry Venables died after battling a “prolonged illness”, a statement from his family said.

Tributes have been paid to the former England manager who has died aged 80. Gary Lineker, Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer, Gary Neville and many others have already spoken fondly of their former boss.

Details regarding the illness Venables was battling before his passing are unknown to the public, as his family decided to keep his condition and his fight private. However, the statement issued by his family announcing his demise said that he had been ill for some time.

It read: “We are completely devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father, who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness. We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time so that we can remember this lovely man. To mourn the loss of. Who we were very lucky to have in our lives.”

As well as managing the Three Lions during Euro 96, Venables was best known for his incredibly successful three years in charge of Barcelona. However, while he was brilliant in the dugout, his career on the pitch might have been even more successful had arthritis not occurred.
