What kind of cancer does have
Terry Bradshaw battled two types of cancer – bladder cancer and Merkel cell carcinoma, which is a type of skin cancer.
Bladder cancer begins in the cells of the bladder. If it is detected in the early stages, it can be corrected. Signs and symptoms include blood in the urine, which makes urine appear bright red or cola in color, frequent urination, painful urination, and back pain.
The risk of bladder cancer can be increased by smoking, age, exposure to chemicals, chronic inflammation of the bladder, and a family history of cancer. It can be prevented by reducing smoking, taking precautions against chemicals and choosing a diet that includes fruits and vegetables.
Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare skin cancer that mostly appears as flesh-colored or bluish-reddish lumps on the face, head, and neck. It is most common in older people and the risk may be increased after prolonged exposure to the sun or a weakened immune system.
Although the causes of Merkel cell carcinoma are unknown, it can result from excessive exposure to sunlight, a weakened immune system, a history of skin cancer, aging and light skin color. It can be treated during peak hours by avoiding the sun, protecting the skin and eyes, and applying sunscreen.
Illness
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, in any given year, more than 20 million American adults suffer from depressive disorders, with women suffering from it at nearly twice the rate than men.
These illnesses include major depressive disorder – often called clinical depression – dysthymic disorder and bipolar disorder. Major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the United States.
“Depression is a physical illness,” Bradshaw says. “The beauty of it is that there are drugs that work. Look at me. I’m always happy-go-lucky, and people look at me and it’s shocking that I might be depressed.”
After his NFL career ended, Bradshaw was finally able to escape the stigma of mental illness in the league (and that’s for another article), and was able to communicate about his clinical depression. He revealed that he often experiences anxiety attacks after games.
The problem escalated when Terri suffered her third divorce in 1999. He could no longer hold back from his depression as he had with his previous two divorces, or a bad game.
