The Third Saturday in October rivalry has been one-sided as of late, as the Alabama Crimson Tide have won 15 consecutive installments since dropping a 16-13 decision on the road in 2006. The third-placed Crimson Tide is expected to continue their dominance when they take on the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers in an SEC on CBS matchup on Saturday. Alabama (6–0, 3–0 SEC) have won by at least 20 points on 13 occasions during their winning streak that began in coach Nick Saban’s first year with the team. Tennessee (5–0, 2–0) has lost seven straight meetings to Knoxville, where it is 20–27–1 on aggregate against the Crimson Tide. Saturday’s meeting is the first in which both teams are unbeaten since 1989. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young (shoulder) is expected to return as he missed last week’s win over the Texas A.

A distance of 310 miles separates campuses in Tuscaloosa and Knoxville, a heated rivalry known as the third Saturday in October.

This series between Alabama and Tennessee has been dominated by Nick Saban since he was appointed as head coach for the Crimson Tide. Meanwhile, volunteers haven’t turned the tide since 2006.

The hatred runs deep, long before former national champion coach Philip Fulmer supplied the NCAA with information about violations within the Alabama program.

Fast forward to the present, where the volunteers, led by head coach Josh Heppel, have one of the best offenses in the country. At 21.3 seconds per game, the Tennessee has the ability to move chains at high speed on the ground or through the air.

That momentum worked against Heppel in Tuscaloosa last season, as Alabama dominated in the 52-24 round. Crimson Tide hasn’t been dropped by a pure tempo team since its second consecutive loss to Ole Miss in 2015.

If Tennessee reverses Georgia later in the season, this game could be a preview of the 2022 SEC Championship.

Injury report

Tennessee wide receiver Cedric Tillman will not play for Volume in Saturday’s game against No. 3 Alabama, according to multiple reports.

Tillman is recovering from a high ankle sprain for which he underwent minor surgery on September 20 to stabilize the ankle and install a device to help it heal.

His absence is a blow to Tennessee’s potential offensive output as it prepares to face Alabama and its 6th-rank total defense.

The receiver has been doing limited physical activity with the team, and it was originally believed that he would be able to return in time for Walls’ game against Alabama today, but this expectation was too optimistic.

This is the third game Tillman will miss. He had surgery the week of the Florida game.
