Beginning his professional career at Millwall in 1983, he made 926 first-team appearances over a 25-year span for nine clubs, including Manchester United, where he won four Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League. He also won the Second Division title with Millwall and the Full Members Cup with Nottingham Forest.
On the international stage he was a regular for the England national team between 1993 and 2002, winning 51 caps and representing them at the 1996 UEFA European Championship and the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup finals.
