Contract

Taysom Hill: Contract| Injury| Highlights| Is hurt

NFL Network’s Tom Pelicero and Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the New Orleans Saints are re-signing quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year, $21 million contract with $21 million guaranteed. Winston is receiving a $14 million signing bonus per rapport.

The free agency signing comes after his bid to trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson declined. The Texans agreed on Friday to trade Watson to the Cleveland Browns, who had offered Houston a trade package along with the Saints, Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons.

Winston returns to New Orleans for a third consecutive season after five years with NFC South-rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who drafted him No. 1 overall in 2015.

Possessing a live hand but a trend with turnovers, Winston joined the Saints in 2020 as Drew Brees’ backup. In 2021 he returned as Breeze’s successor and defeated Tessome Hill for the QB1 spot. Through seven starts with Winston, the Saints were 5-2. Although Winston was not lighting the scoreboard, he had limited his turnover. He threw 1,170 yards and 14 touchdowns for only three interceptions in those seven games.

Injury

Dalton was able to make a whole lot of practice on Wednesday while battling a back injury against the Cincinnati Bengals last week. Winston has been battling back and ankle problems and has been a limited participant in exercise for a few weeks, so he is well on his way to recovery. But the Saints plan to keep Dalton at the center until Winston’s body is right and he can fully practice and play. We will see how the situation develops in the coming days and weeks.

Highlights

The New Orleans Saints have now completed four training camp exercises.

In practice number four quarterback Jameis Winston was intercepted twice.

The interceptions came on the first two plays of 7-on-7 practice.

Defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson got the first interception, while cornerback Bradley Robbie had the second pick.

Winston returned to teams practice, joining rookie receiver Chris Olev on a 60-yard touchdown.

Sant will return to practice on Monday for his first padded exercise of the 2022 training camp.

Is hurt

The first overall pick of 2015 appeared in only seven games during the 2021 campaign, before suffering a torn ACL that sidelined him for the rest of the year. He also dealt with a leg injury during the 2022 preseason and will now be slowed down by his current back ailment.

Winston was solid against the Falcons last weekend, completing 23 of 34 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two carries for nine yards.

However, Tom Brady and the Buccaneers will present a formidable challenger to Winston and the Saints, although New Orleans has beaten Tampa Bay in seven consecutive regular-season meetings.

If the Saints beat the Buccaneers, they would be in first place in the NFC South with a 2–0 record.
