Contract

Tesome Hill has perhaps the most unique role in the NFL as a pass-catching, quarterback hybrid over the years.

In 2020, the Saints quarterback became the first player since 1999 to record at least 90 passing, rushing and receiving yards in a season. For his career, he has 1,103 passing yards, 913 rushing yards and 388 receiving yards, making him only the 13th player in history to have at least 1,000, 900 and 300 yards in the three categories respectively.

And now, he is set to stay in the Saints uniform for a few more years after signing an extension on Monday.

The contract however is not like others in the NFL as it will fluctuate entirely depending on his role with the team. What makes his deal special? The Sporting News breaks it down.

Extension

Saints quarterback Tysom Hill has signed a four-year extension that could cost anywhere from $40 million to $95 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal also includes a $22.5 million guarantee.

The deal is unique in that Hill will currently receive a base salary of $40 million for playing the role as the Saints’ backup quarterback. If he is the Saints’ starting quarterback for the next four seasons, he will receive an additional $55 million, per chef.

Hill, 31, has attempted just 142 passes during his four active seasons with the Saints. Most of those passes came when Hill replaced an injured Drew Tree for four games during the 2020 season. Hill went 3-1 as a starter in that period, completing 72.7% of his passes with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He ran for eight touchdowns last season, while also caught a touchdown pass.

Injury update

Injuries were the main story for the New Orleans Saints going into a “Thursday Night Football” matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, and those issues were blown up in the matchup itself. For the first time this season, Tessam Hill was cleared at quarterback as Sean Payton picked up his Swiss Army knife to work exclusively under center in the Week 13 opener.

In the first three drives, both teams were unable to put points on the board, but Hill was working efficiently, completing five of his eight initial pass attempts for 29 yards. However, it was on that eighth throw where Hill would jam the middle finger of his throwing hand on an unfinished pass to receiver Marquez Callaway.

Replays would later show Hill’s hand colliding with Dallas defensive end Dorence Armstrong’s hand on the third and seventh attempts. As the punting unit comes out, Hill retreats and is evaluated in a blue medical tent.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Tessam Hill has only 13 pass attempts in his NFL career and is noted as a special team contributor and even a receiver. But head coach Sean Payton apparently still thinks highly about his future under center.

Peter King of NBC Sports revealed in his Football Morning in America column that Peyton “believes Hill has a chance to be the Steve Young type in and out of pocket.”

The revelation came in a segment discussing who would start as quarterback for New Orleans in 2021, should Drew Brees retire, and King suggested that “Peyton would not stand in for a quarterback that would make it [Jamis].” ] replaces like Winston.”

King went on to say that he thinks the quarterback job should start in 2021, should Trees retire or move on, is “hills to lose”, as Winston doesn’t have much chance to prove it Maybe he can move on from the turnover. Issue throughout his career if the tree plays all year round.

Winston threw an impressive 30 interceptions in 2019 alone and threw no fewer than 11 in any of his five seasons, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Arm talent is not a question, however, as he also threw for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2019. He underwent Lasik eye surgery this off-season, to help him read the defense more efficiently in the future.
