Major League Baseball’s regular season is now over a month old. Each team has played at least 23 games, or 14 percent of its schedule. In other words, it’s that time of the year when people start wondering if their team’s performance is really a better performer? After all, the most satisfying breakouts are those that come from unexpected sources.
Take Seattle Mariners first baseman Ty France, for example. He never made the top-100 prospect list, and he instead profiled as a utility fielder. When he was included in the Austin NOLA trade on the 2020 deadline, it was meant as an afterthought. Yet France has since emerged as a major win for Seattle, batting .297/.371/.452 (132 ops) with 25 home runs and substitutions above 6.1 wins in 203 games.
This week, we’ll look at six players – three hitters today and three pitchers in just a few days – who are getting off to surprisingly good starts this season. In each example, we have tried to answer the question: are they real? Let’s start with the three hitters.

It was the fall of 2017, and Trent Woodward had decided to retire from professional baseball due to a significant hip surgery. Fortunately, he had spent four seasons as an Astros farmhand, and in his final season, the Astros introduced him to new techniques, which he found in the form of precise drills enabled the pursuit of swing proficiency.
He did not recommend one style of swing, but recommended a range, as well as exercises that helped those who stayed within that range. Woodward showed them to Ward, and Ward immediately saw the results.
“Initially, I thought, ‘Oh, I’m going to do this, and my life will be great, and it’s all over,'” Ward said. “‘I’m just going to the rake every day.'”
He raked in every day – in the minor leagues. After an impressive Double-A stint, he progressed to Triple-A, where he continued to excel. As of August 2018, Ward was in the major leagues.
