In 2020, Heinicke replaced the injured Alex Smith in the Wild Card playoff game for Washington, and he started the majority of the 2021 season after Ryan Fitzpatrick was injured.
After Alex Smith was out with injury, Heinicke started the team’s Wild Card playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the 31–23 loss, Heinicke completed 26 of 44 passes for 306 yards, threw one touchdown and one interception, and ran for a touchdown.
