The American was practicing on center court before the final. Speaking about the events before his match against Nadal, he said, “It was such a roller coaster … there was no audio but like I screamed really loud and I was trying to act really hard because We’ve got cameras here. I probably would’ve screamed out loud if it weren’t, it might have looked like I was overreacting, but that might have been like the worst pain I’ve ever felt.”

Comparing the severity of the injury to the one at the French Open, Fritz said, “Not even close. It’s too fast and I’m just, I’m really, really upset here because I feel like it’s going to hurt me.”

Injury update

The 24-year-old American pulled off his biggest win despite an injury to his right ankle, which was so painful when he tested it on Monday morning he didn’t think he would be able to play.

Nadal, 35, was also pushing himself with pain, having been treated twice on his upper body during the match.

Fritz said of Nadal’s struggles, “There are certainly some things going on, but this has led to the first American men’s champion in Indian Wells since Andre Agassi in 2001 and the youngest Indian Wells men’s champion since Novak Djokovic in 2011.” The joy of becoming did not diminish.

Nadal has already said he will not attend next week’s Miami Masters to rest his body and prepare for the claycourt season.

Ankle injury

There were 21 Grand Slams on one side and a young player of 24 years on the other. On one hand he was one of the top players in the world to win 20 matches, while on the other hand he came on the court after suffering injury and pain. But history was made. Injured Taylor Fritz stops Rafael Nadal’s victory chariot. Nadal had not lost the last 20 matches but Fritz gave him a taste of it in the Indian Wells final on Sunday. They won the match 6-3, 7-6. More than two decades have passed since the last time an American won the title. Then Andre Agassi did this feat.

Injury

Rafael Nadal’s Indian Wells final against Taylor Fritz has been in doubt for a few hours. The American canceled his practice session ahead of the final due to an ankle problem. This means that the world number four could be given a record 37th Masters 1000 final without needing to play.
