Sydney McLaughlin produced one of the greatest track performances of all time on Friday, breaking his own 400m hurdles world record to win World Championships gold.
The 22-year-old wiped the ground to set the first world record for these championships. More impressively, it marked the fourth straight major race in which he bettered the mark.
“It’s untrue,” McLaughlin said in a post-race interview at the track.
Femke Bol of the Netherlands finished second in 52.27 – that’s a 1.59-second gap – and defending world champion Delilah Muhammad finished third in 53.13 – a time that would have been taken away from the race only seven years earlier.
McLaughlin surpassed Femke Boll of the Netherlands (52.27) and American compatriot Delilah Muhammad (53.13).
“We knew it was going to be one of those days,” McLaughlin said after winning his first individual world championship title.
