Steve Kerr 2024: DNC| Basketball Career| Speech

Steve Kerr, head Steve Kerr coach of the Golden State Warriors as well as the USA men’s Olympic-gold-winning basketball team, spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday.

“As a coach and former player, as a husband, a son, a father, even a grandfather and an American, I believe in a certain type of leadership. I believe that Leaders should demonstrate dignity. I believe leaders should tell the truth,” Kerr said, listing additional qualities people should look for in themselves.

“Don’t you want the same qualities in your president?” He said. “When you think about it that way, it’s not a competition.” He then threw his support behind the Harris-Walz ticket, saying that the country needed “real leadership”.

Capping his remarks, Kerr referenced NBA star player Steph Curry’s “night night” celebratory gesture while he held his hands to the side of his head.
“In the words of the great Steph Curry, we can say to Donald Trump, ‘Night, night,'” Kerr said after the Election Night results came in.

During the first day of the convention, delegates formally adopted a party platform. Over the weekend, Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz formally endorsed the party’s nominees.

Basketball Career

Kerr became the head coach of the US national team in 2021, succeeding his old coach Gregg Popovich. He was an assistant on the gold medal-winning team at the 2020 Olympics and most recently led the US to gold again at the 2024 Paris Olympics earlier this month.

Speech

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr spoke on Monday during the first night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

During his speech, Kerr explained why he accepted the invitation to “step into a different kind of arena” and speak at the DNC.

“I believe in a certain kind of leadership,” he said. “I believe leaders should display dignity. I believe leaders should speak the truth. I believe Leaders should be able to laugh at themselves. I believe leaders should care about and love the people they lead.”

Kerr said that with Harris and her running mate Tim Walz, he sees “all of those qualities.”

“[Election night] After the results come in, in the words of the great Steph Curry, we can say to Donald Trump, ‘Night, night!'”
