Stetson Bennett’s time as quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams is officially up.
Drafted in the fourth round after leading Georgia to consecutive national championships, Bennett took to the practice field Wednesday for the first time in his new threads.
The Rams posted the highlights of the event – with Bennett throwing two accurate deep balls to receivers Sam James and Van Jefferson, one of which began with coach Sean McVay in coverage.
It appears that Bennett, who will be the backup to veteran Matthew Stafford, has enjoyed a solid starting job – and he has many more opportunities to impress.
Wednesday was the Rams’ first day of team activity, during which most of the players came on and off the field. The OTAs will officially start next week, running from May 22-23, May 25, May 30-31, June 2, and June 5-8.
The mandatory minicamp from June 13-15 wraps up the early summer portion of the Rams’ offseason, giving the team a break of more than a month before returning to training camp and the preseason.
Los Angeles will begin their quest for a bounce-back season by traveling to Lumen Field on September 10 for a road matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

Preseason
In his debut, Bennett completed 17 of 29 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown, though the Chargers were defeated by the Rams, 34–17. The game was played at SoFi Stadium, the same field where Bennett led Georgia to a stunning victory over TCU in the CFP national championship game in the ’22 college season.
The Rams selected Bennett in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, believing he had a chance to find a role in the NFL. The rookie quarterback will begin the season third on the Rams’ depth chart behind Matthew Stafford and Rypien.
After the game, McVay praised Bennett for his performance.
“I thought he had a lot of good opportunities to learn and you can see some of the things that got us excited about him,” McVay said via Rams reporter Stu Jackson.
Coincidentally, former TCU quarterback Max Duggan also played in the game for the Chargers. Despite Duggan playing the entire second half, the rookie completed only two of three passes for 19 yards in the game.
Contract
According to SpotTrac, Bennett’s contract is estimated to be worth $4.54 million over four years with a $699,140 signing bonus. McClendon received a $4 million contract with a $244,980 signing bonus.
In Georgia’s 65–7 loss to TCU in the College Football Playoff title game, Bennett completed 18 of 25 passes for 304 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in the game, rushing three times for 39 yards and two touchdowns . He would earn Offensive Game MVP in the game, earning him the honor in all four CFP games he played.
Bennett amassed 177 passing yards in the first half against the Horned Frogs, making the super senior the first Georgia quarterback to surpass 4,000 yards in a season. In the first quarter, Bennett surpassed Aaron Murray’s program record for passing yards in a season (3,893 set in 2012). Bennett decided to use his final year of NCAA eligibility and play for the Bulldogs once again in 2022.
