Released:

The New England Patriots, after signaling their intention to release cornerback Stephon Gilmore, instead worked out a last-minute trade Wednesday that sent the former NFL defensive player of the year to the Carolina Panthers.

Carolina is 3-1 and ranked third in the NFL in total defense. The Panthers lost rookie cornerback Jaycee Horn to a broken foot suffered during a Week 3 triumph over the Houston Texans. They allowed four touchdown passes by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in Sunday’s 36-28 loss in Arlington, Tex.

The biggest question will be money, as the Bucs have already jumped through a seemingly endless run of financial hoops to stay under the salary cap after bringing back the entire starting lineup from last year’s title team.

Stephon Gilmore would take more salary cap magic, but the Bucs could indeed make it happen by doing another creative deal with multiple void years, as they’ve done with many others this offseason.
