Retiring
Stefan Vogt had a pretty ideal retirement setup. A World Series champion with the Braves to end the 2021 season opened the door for him to ride into the sunset. Deep down, though, Vogt knew that there was only one very right ending, and he got it.
Although Vogt played for six teams in 10 seasons in the major leagues, there is no organization he more closely identifies with than the A. Which is why he chose to sign back with Oakland this spring despite receiving offers from other clubs. Ahead of Thursday’s game against the Mariners, the 37-year-old catcher announced he plans to retire at the end of the season.
“It was something I wanted to do while in Oakland,” Vogt said of his decision to announce his retirement. “I made up my mind at the end of July that this was going to happen. I wanted to share this with the people of Oakland and spend some time before the end of the year and enjoy the last few weeks. It felt fitting to do it in Oakland. Felt like it was the right time.”
