Just before the start of the game, it was announced that Chris Paul had broken his right thumb. Paul plans to reevaluate in six to eight weeks. Read more here.

The NBA Legends Awards and the NBA G League Next Gem game also took place the day before Sunday.

On Saturday night, Obi Toppin claimed the dunk contest title after beating Juan Toscano-Andersen in the final round. Toppin won it by going between the legs and tapping the backboard before throwing the ball down. The contest had one winner, but the memes would drop out. It was not beautiful.

The new 3-point champion, Karl-Anthony Towns, is the first major since Kevin Love in 2012 to win the event. Towns finished with 29 in the final round. Earlier, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen won the skill challenge in front of their home fans.
