Watching chiefs celebrate
A photo of Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stephen Diggs at Arrowhead Stadium in January 2021, watching the AFC Championship ceremony by the Kansas City Chiefs, is being re-shared as the Kansas City Bills chiefs on Sunday. Longtime Buffalo News photographer James P. McCoy explains how he found the photo that went viral and became a symbol of Bill’s desire for revenge.
I covered the entire 2020 Bills season from the front row of the stands, and the AFC Championship game was no different. No media photographers were allowed on the field due to the COVID-19 restrictions. It is difficult to cover a professional football game from this vantage point. I am used to shooting from the field and documenting the action at eye level. I usually try to show readers a point of view they don’t see when viewing from the stand.
Several local newspaper and television photographers, along with national outlets, all came to the front row. I would move as fast as I could between seats, excusing myself while passing another journalist. Everyone had the orgy of Kovid-19 in their mind and we tried to maintain a distance of 6 feet, but it was impossible.
The game didn’t lend itself to great action pictures. I wanted pictures that told the story of the game. Being out of the game, I decided to focus on the players’ reactions. The game ended and the Bills players left the field, hugging as soon as Kansas City began their celebration. All the players were leaving the field except Stephen Diggs. Some players tried to leave him, but he refused. Coach Sean McDermott came running from the locker room and consoled his star receiver.
Standing alone
Over time, the Buffalo Bills can and should be proud of their weather. They broke a long drought by winning a division title, hosting a playoff game, and winning a pair of postseason games. Josh Allen led an offense that was one of the most exciting in the NFL.
Moments after the Bills’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, applauding a stellar season that was not going to diminish.
As the Chiefs’ celebration was drawing to one end, Bills All-Pro receiver Stephen Diggs stood on the sidelines, watching. Presumably, this was starting her inspiration for the next season.
Chiefs picture
A Chiefs fan made his way onto the field at Arrowhead Stadium during Sunday night’s Bills-Chiefs Divisional Round playoff thriller, but security didn’t get to him at first.
Instead, Bills wide receiver Stephen Diggs took down the wild fan. Diggs was seen running from the other side of the line to keep the fan on the ground, as captured in a video. After Diggs tackled, the safety was able to grab the fan and land him before taking him off the field.
Stephen Diggs had a quiet night on the stat sheet in a 42-36 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at the Buffalo Bills.
The Pro Bowl wide receiver took a backseat to Gabriel Davis’s record-setting performance and had only three catches on six official goals for seven yards. While he added a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, it was an uncharacteristically quiet night for a stellar player expected to feast against the Chiefs’ inconsistent secondary.
Diggs found a way to channel his frustration, though—into the shoulder of a fan who ran across the field with two minutes remaining in a 26-21 playoff game.
While the CBS broadcast only caught the safety’s tail end wiping the fan off the turf, this video from the stand shows the Buffalo receiver taking the initiative:
