Qualification

Sport Climbing Olympic: Qualification| Results| Athletes

In qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics, a total of 68 climbers, with equal distribution between men and women, will compete in two different competition climbing disciplines for the first time at these Games, namely: a unique competition bouldering-and-competition lead combined. climbing competition, and a separate competition speed climbing competition.

Results

The men’s combined competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics was a climbing competition combining three disciplines (speed, bouldering, lead). It was held at the Aomi Urban Sports Park in Tokyo from 3 August to 5 August 2021. A total of 20 athletes from 15 nations competed. Sport climbing was one of four new sports added to the 2020 Olympic programme.

During the qualifying round, France’s Bassa Mawem injured the lower bicep tendon of his left arm and was forced to withdraw from the final.

Athletes

Olympic sport climbing is divided into three disciplines: bouldering, speed and lead.

Bouldering: Athletes climb a 4.5 meter wall (about 15 feet) without ropes in a limited time and with minimal effort.

Lead: Climbers climb as high as possible on a 15-meter wall (about 50 feet) in six minutes in a single attempt.

Pace: Through one-on-one elimination rounds and a race against time, climbers climb a 15-meter wall with a five-degree incline. The best athletes can do it in less than six seconds for men, and top women can usually accomplish it in seven seconds.

What is different at these Games compared to Tokyo is that speed climbing is separated into its own event, while bouldering and lead are combined. This structure allows climbers to focus on their features.

The scoring system also differs from that used in Tokyo. During the 2021 Games the scores for each discipline were multiplied by each other to obtain the final score. But with speed taken out of the equation, the new judging approach to bouldering and lead involves a maximum of 200 points. Climbers earn points in bouldering by moving up the wall to reach different “zones” (5 points for a lower zone, 10 points for a higher zone) and top hold (25 points). Points are deducted for attempts, and a perfect bouldering round of polishing four boulder problems is worth 100 points.
