Spencer Gray Dinwiddie (born April 6, 1993) is an American professional basketball player for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Colorado Buffaloes and earned first-team All-conference honors in the Pac-12 in 2013 as a sophomore. He missed most of his junior year after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Dinwiddie recovered and was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft. After two seasons with the Pistons, he joined the Brooklyn Nets in December 2016 and played with them until he was traded to the Washington Wizards in 2021.

At William Howard Taft High School, Dinwiddie was recognized as one of the greatest standout athletes since Jordan Farmer. He scored 5.9 points and 4.1 assists as a starting point guard with a fellow 2015 draftee in DeAndre Daniels at the conclusion of his junior season. Dinwiddie maxed out his game as he began his final year representing the school, averaging 11.2 points and 7.7 assists. He was one of the most accomplished passersby in the school’s history, and in 2011 the John R. Wooden became the California High School Player of the Year. However, Ryan Anderson of Long Beach Poly was named California Mr. Basketball. Dinwiddie became one of seven players to have won the coveted award as a senior. The powerful duo of Daniels and Dinwiddie won the City Championship this season as well. This final season of Taft helped Dinwiddie gain the attention of colleges across the country. He opted to attend Colorado instead of Harvard, Oregon, Santa Clara or UNLV.
Contract
Dinwiddie came to the Wizards in sign-and-trade with the Nets during the 2021 off-season. He is in the first year of a three-year, $54 million contract.
The final year of his deal (2023–24) is only partially guaranteed. Of his $18.8 million salary that season, $10 million is guaranteed, with the rest guaranteed by June 30, 2023. Dinwiddie also has an unexpected $7.7 million in incentive that can be added over the life of his contract.
What was Spencer Dinwiddie’s injury?
Dinwiddie suffered a torn ACL in just three games in the 2020-21 season with the Nets. He was one of several injuries to the Nets last season that derailed their hopes of eventually winning the championship.
Once recovered, Dinwiddie looked forward to finding a new home with Kyrie Irving and James Harden operating the backcourt in Brooklyn. She is now fully recovered from that injury and continues to build chemistry with Bradley Beal.
Highlights
Dinwiddie was selected by the Detroit Pistons as the 38th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. [13] He appeared in 34 games for the Pistons as a rookie, getting a start [14] and two assignments for the Grand Rapids Drive, the Pistons’ D-League ally. His solo debut came on February 20, 2015, when a pair of trades left the Pistons short-handed. He had 12 points and nine assists in his career in a 100–91 win over the Chicago Bulls. Eight days later, he scored a season-best 20 points to go with eight assists in 25 minutes off the bench in a 99–95 loss to the Washington Wizards.

After a long wait over the past few days, the Washington Wizards have decided to make their move on the trade deadline.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Wizards have acquired Ish Smith and Vernon Carey from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Montreal Harrell.
Smith is the biggest part of the deal with Charlotte. He played for the Wizards last season, averaging 6.7 points per game, helping Washington make the playoffs last season.
The trade also sends Harrell to Charlotte after a half-season stint in Washington. He averaged 14.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game this season. The move helps ease the crowd in the center position with Daniel Gafford and Thomas Bryant capable of playing significant time in this position.
Washington is in need of a significant retool, given that he still has post-season ambitions, even with Bradley Beal out for the season. Even after Smith got involved, this deal alone doesn’t move the needle that much.
