Day 1
Toss news: Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl first in the opening Test in South Africa on Thursday as the tourists aim to follow up on their historic One Day International series win.
Bangladesh won their maiden ODI series in South Africa last week and stand a decent chance of success in Tests as the home team is missing some of its top players in the Indian Premier League.
South Africa lack batsmen Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen, pacers Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jensen and all-rounder Dwayne Pretorius, who opted to play in the IPL ahead of the two-Test series against Bangladesh.
That meant debuts in the first Test of the series in Durban for batsmen Ryan Rickleton and seamer Lizad Williams and a recall for spinner Simon Harmer, who last played a Test in 2015.
Bangladesh’s sans opening batsman is Tamim Iqbal, who captained the ODI side to their series win. He is unwell, while pacer Shorful Islam has been rested. After not playing the ODIs, regular Test captain Mominul Haque comes in to lead the team.
South Africa: Dean Elgar (Captain), Sarel Irvi, Kegan Pietersen, Temba Bavuma, Ryan Rickleton, Kyle Wren, Wynn Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer, Lizad Williams, Duane Olivier.
Bangladesh: Mominul Haque (captain), Shadman Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Yasir Ali, Liton Das, Mehdi Hasan Miraj, Taskin Ahmed, Khalid Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain.
