Simone Biles’ boyfriend, NFL football player Jonathan Owens, stands by her side during the Tokyo Olympics. Biles withdrew from the team final citing mental health concerns. The next day, she withdrew from Thursday’s individual all-around competition, and would not defend her gold medal.

The US women’s gymnastics team went on to win the silver medal. On Instagram, Biles posted a photo with her teammates Sunissa Lee, Jordan Chillies and Grace McCallum. Biles wrote, “I will always be inspired by your determination to never give up and fight adversity…he stepped in when I couldn’t. Thank you for being there for me and having my back!” Owens commented on the post, “I’m so proud of you all.”

On July 29, Owens wrote a full tribute post dedicated to his girlfriend on Instagram, which featured a carousel of photos from their time together. He wrote, “Imma whatever rides with you through baby… your strength and courage is unmatched and you inspire me more and more every day.”

The post came around the same time that Biles defended her decision to pull out of the Olympics on her Instagram Story. “You have always been my winner child and will you never forget that,” he said. Owens, who celebrated his 26th birthday while outside Biles, expressed his love and excitement to see his “beautiful smile” again. “You know I’m always here for you baby,” he wrote.
