Constellation cup 2023
Kia Ora, good evening and welcome to Newshub’s live coverage of the Constellation Cup opener between Australia and New Zealand at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena.
The Silver Ferns enter this four-match series after defeating England’s second-ranked team for the Tannie Jamieson Trophy last month, after a surprise loss in the opening match.
Coach Dame Noeline Taurua stuck to her starting line-up during that series-decider, exposing a relatively inexperienced midcourt and novice shooter Amelia Walmsley to international competition.
After the disappointment of finishing fourth at the World Cup, Taurua must now turn her attention to the next tournament in four years, but has only committed to the coaching job until January while she reconsiders her future.
Walmsley’s emergence was a big positive from the England series after Grace Nweke failed to recover from the knee injury she sustained in the World Cup. Nweke is expected to return sometime during the Constellation Cup, which poses a selection headache for Dame Noeline as she looks to find the right combination to topple the new world champions.
