“I didn’t make any mistakes in these Olympic Games,” Oka said. “I was a challenger, but I wanted to win.”

Oka’s teammate Daiki Hashimoto, the defending champion, fell during his pommel horse routine and finished sixth.

Despite Hashimoto’s struggles, it was another sweet evening for Japan, which made a remarkable last-minute turnaround in the team final on Monday to defeat China in the final rotation.

Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka showed strong spirit and took advantage of early mistakes by top contenders to fend off China’s Zhang Boheng to win the men’s all-around gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday.

Zhang took silver and her compatriot Xiao Ruoteng took bronze, just 0.233 points behind.
“I had a strong desire to win and I knew that if I could beat (Daiki) Hashimoto, I could win the title,” Oka said.

“It was really great that I was able to complete these Olympics without making any mistakes.”
The tense final came down to the last apparatus – the horizontal bar – and 20-year-old Oka kept her balance despite the intense pressure to score a winning total of 86.832.

After Zhang, the last competitor on bars, fell to defeat after a nearly flawless routine, every single person in Bercy Arena had their eyes glued to the big screen to see where the gold would end up.

Medals

In the last three Olympic Games, the men’s gymnastics all-around title has been won by Japanese gymnasts.

Shinnosuke Oka has made it four.

Shinnosuke, who was unseeded in his first Olympic all-around final (86.832), joins an illustrious list of champions, including 2012 and 2016 Olympic all-around champion Kohei Uchimura and 2020 Tokyo Olympics all-around champion Daiki Hashimoto Are.

Shinnosuke will leave Paris with at least two medals, adding a team gold to his collection.

“I have made my mark as an (Olympic) champion,” Shinnosuke said. “Now, I want to continue to challenge myself and win, as the audience expects from me. The feeling of challenge is something I don’t want to lose.”

2021 world all-around champion Zhang Boheng bounced back from a fall in the first rotation to win silver (86.599). Tokyo Olympics all-around silver medalist Xiao Ruoteng finished third (86.364) – the first men’s Olympic all-around podium featuring two Chinese gymnasts.

Schedule and results

Forty-eight hours after helping Team USA capture a historic bronze medal in the team competition, Paul Judah and Frederick Richard finished 14th and 15th, respectively, in the individual all-around final Wednesday night — their last event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 20-year-old Richard got off to a bad start, falling on the pommel horse in his first rotation and was unable to match some of the impressive scores he set in the team final, where the US won its first Olympic medal since 2008. Judah was solid across the board but there was no difficulty in his routine to be in the mix for a medal.

The race for gold ultimately came down to the final rounds, with several gymnasts from China, Japan and Great Britain vying for the podium.

Ultimately, Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka emerged with the gold medal, giving Japan its fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event. China’s Boheng Zhang and Ruoteng Xiao earned silver and bronze respectively.
