Ten years before competing for a gold medal in the high jump at the Paris Olympics, American Shelby McEwen was known for her leaps in another sport.

The then-teen won Jordan Brand’s “First to Fly” dunk contest in Las Vegas in 2014, starting at the free-throw line, flying into the air and ending with an explosive one-handed dunk.

McEwen’s basketball career came to a halt in 2017
Two seasons followed at Northwest Mississippi Community College, but by then he had begun experimenting with the high jump as an independent athlete. The potential McEwen showed was the start of a journey that ended at the Stade de France on Saturday night when he faced New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr with an Olympic gold medal to spare.

McEwen and Kerr both jumped 2.36 metres, but were unable to surpass 2.38. Then they had to make a decision: jump or share the gold.

Mississippi native Shelby McEwen won a silver medal for the United States in the men’s high jump on Saturday at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

It came down to a tiebreaker jump-off between McEwen and Hamish Kerr of New Zealand. Both of them had already cleared the 2.36-metre bar, but neither could reach 2.38 metres, requiring a tiebreaker.

Both missed 2.36 meters in the tiebreaker. McEwen then missed by 2.34 meters and Kerr took the gold medal. McEwen’s jump of 2.36 meters in regulation was a personal best.

Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim finished third with 2.34 metres. He did not clear the 2.36-metre bar, so was not part of the tiebreaker.

McEwen, 28, is from Abbeville, and went to Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he played on the basketball team. He then went to Alabama and competed on the track and field team there.

It is the first high jump medal for the US since 2012. McEwen was making his second Olympic appearance after finishing 12th at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
